Anyone who has traveled on a mission trip knows that plans rarely unfold exactly as expected. In Guatemala, there is even a phrase people often use: “Guatemala time.”

Schedules shift. Circumstances change. Unexpected opportunities arise.

Before this year’s trip began, volunteers were encouraged to embrace a single theme—flexibility. That mindset proved valuable throughout the week as the team adjusted to changing needs and discovered new ways to serve.

One unexpected opportunity came through local ministry partners Todd and Maureen Erickson. While Todd serves as a pastor in the area, Maureen works with young women who are navigating difficult life circumstances. Through mentorship, relationship-building, and practical support, she helps create opportunities for growth and hope.

Although serving with this group was not part of the original itinerary, several volunteers were able to spend time alongside Maureen and contribute to her work. What began as an unplanned adjustment became one of the week’s most meaningful experiences.

The lesson was simple: some of the most impactful moments in life happen when people are willing to step beyond their plans and respond to the needs in front of them.

Flexibility is often uncomfortable because it requires letting go of control. Yet it also creates space for connection, service, and unexpected blessings.

The Guatemala trip served as a reminder that changing the world does not always require elaborate plans. Sometimes it simply requires an open heart and a willingness to say yes when opportunities appear.

There are countless needs in communities around the world—and in our own neighborhoods. The question is not whether opportunities to help exist. The question is whether we are willing to respond when they do.
